Website Optimization for AI. A Guide for Affiliates
Published: 10.09.2026
AI services are gradually becoming another way to search for information on the Internet. A user may not browse a dozen links in search results, but instead ask AI a question and immediately receive a ready-made answer with links to sources. For affiliates, this creates a new task. They need to make sure that the website’s content can be easily found, correctly understood, and used in the answer. Therefore, alongside traditional SEO, website optimization for AI is being discussed more and more often.
One of the areas of such optimization is machine-readable content, meaning content whose structure is understandable not only to humans but also to automated systems.

Website optimization for AI is the process of working with the structure, content, and technical accessibility of pages that helps AI systems access and correctly interpret information. This does not mean that texts need to be written specifically for robots or that traditional SEO should be abandoned. On the contrary, a significant part of these principles is already well known to affiliates. What matters here is a clear page structure, specific headings, up-to-date information, logical blocks, correct product names, and content accessibility for crawling.
The difference is that now it is worth thinking not only about the page’s position in traditional search results. What also becomes important is how easily an AI system can understand individual fragments of the content and use them to answer a specific question. This is exactly why the concept of machine-readable content is related to content that is easier for automated systems to process without losing context.
Why AI Content Optimization Is Being Discussed Now
In August 2026, USA Today Co. talked about experiments with content formats, metadata, and page structure that could make it easier for AI systems to work with the publisher’s content. The company is testing different approaches, including Markdown, page templates, and a modular content structure. USA Today is also analyzing which formats appear more often in AI-generated answers.
At the same time, the goal is not to replace regular articles with texts “for robots.” The publisher is looking for a structure that remains convenient for readers while also allowing automated systems to more easily identify the topic, key facts, and connections between individual parts of the page. Essentially, USA Today is trying to sit on two chairs at once: to make content equally understandable to both people and machines. And it seems that in this case, this is entirely possible.
How AI Sees a Regular Web Page
For a person, a website is a finished visual page. We see the design, photos, tables, buttons, menus, and highlighted blocks. An automated system works with it differently. It can analyze available text, headings, links, metadata, structured data, and other elements to determine what the page is about and what information it contains. At the same time, AI does not always need the entire piece of content.
Imagine that a large review of five financial services is published on your showcase. A user asks: “Which of these services has no monthly fee?” To provide an answer, the system may only need a comparison table or one specific section of the article.
That is why, when optimizing a website for AI, it is important that not only the entire page has a clear structure. Its individual sections should also retain their meaning if the system works with them separately. Even a high-quality article can be inconvenient for automated processing.
What Prevents AI from Correctly Understanding Content
- Unclear headings. For example, the phrase “What Else You Need to Know” does not explain what specific information is included in the section. Instead, it is better to use the heading “Fees and Additional Charges of Service X.” This is clearer for AI.
- Large blocks of text that simultaneously describe product features, benefits, pricing, and limitations. It is better to divide such information into separate logical sections.
- Inconsistency in names. If the same product is called differently in different parts of the page, this can create unnecessary ambiguity. If the official product name is “Product X Premium,” there is no need to alternate between Product X Premium, Premium X, X Premium Service, and other variations.
- Key information being unavailable in text form. For example, if important product features are presented only in an image, it is advisable to duplicate them as text. It is much easier for AI systems to work with text than to analyze images in search of text.
How to Structure an Affiliate Article for AI
For most websites, AI optimization can start with a regular content audit. There is no need to rewrite the entire website or create a separate AI version of each page. It makes sense to simply check your website against a list of specific points.
Clear H1, H2, and H3 Heading Hierarchy
H1 should clearly describe the main topic of the page. H2 should be used for major content sections, while H3 should only be used to provide further detail within them. At the same time, the headings themselves should preferably be specific. For example, “Loan Eligibility Requirements” or “Who Service X Is Suitable For” instead of “Conclusion” or “What You Can Get.” Such headings may sometimes seem less creative, but they immediately explain what the section contains. And since users are increasingly searching for information through AI assistants, such headings help the system clearly identify the content of each section.
Dividing Content into Self-Contained Blocks
It is advisable to dedicate one block to one main topic. For example, in a review of a financial product, you can separately describe:
- main terms;
- customer requirements;
- rates and fees;
- repayment terms;
- benefits;
- limitations.
This makes it easier for the reader to find the necessary information, while an individual fragment of the article does not lose its meaning without the surrounding paragraphs.
Use Tables for Comparisons
AI systems really like tables. It is much easier for them to perform analysis this way. After all, AI is a machine, and it is more skilled at working with numbers. Tables are especially useful for comparison sites, since a significant part of their content is based on comparing products and services.
For example:
| Service | Rate | Term | Fee | Main Benefit |
| Service A | … | … | … | … |
| Service B | … | … | … | … |
| Service C | … | … | … | … |
It is important to use the same criteria for all products. If one service lists the rate, the second only lists a bonus, and the third provides a general description, the comparison becomes less clear for both humans and machines.
Clear Answers
The user should not have to put together a conclusion from five paragraphs on their own. The answer should be “right on the surface.” A person comes to a website with a problem that your website can solve. For example, we write: “Service X is suitable for users who value having no monthly fee.” After that, you can explain the terms and arguments.
This format is convenient for the reader and, at the same time, makes an individual fragment of the page understandable outside the context of the entire article.
Up-to-Date Content
A comparison site often contains information that changes quickly, such as rates, prices, tariffs, bonuses, product features, or terms. It is advisable to clearly indicate the publication date and the date of the last update. Well-structured but outdated information does not become more useful simply because it is easy to process automatically.
Is Markdown Necessary for Website Optimization for AI?
It was USA Today’s experiments that drew additional attention to Markdown. This format allows text to be presented in a simple structure: headings, paragraphs, lists, links, and other basic elements without a large amount of code related to page design.
This raises an interesting question: “Do affiliates need to create separate simplified versions of comparison sites in Markdown format that may potentially be easier for AI systems to process?”
A Markdown version is, simply put, a simplified text version of the same article without the website design and unnecessary HTML code.
USA Today is only testing different approaches, but for now, the answer is no. There is no confirmation that Markdown itself gives a page an advantage over well-structured HTML. Google also states that there is no need to create special files for AI in order for content to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Therefore, for now, it makes much more sense to invest time in the quality and structure of the main pages rather than creating duplicates of them in another format.
Check AI Crawler Access to Your Website
The next logical stage of website optimization for AI is a technical check. Even perfectly structured content will be of little help to a specific system if it cannot access it. For an AI service to find and use information from your website, it logically needs to access the pages first. For this, AI platforms use special bots, or crawlers. They automatically browse pages and collect the information available on them.
For example, OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT’s search features, while Perplexity uses PerplexityBot.
A website owner can allow or block such bots from accessing pages. These rules are usually set in the robots.txt file. Additional website security settings can also accidentally block the necessary bot. Therefore, before blocking an AI crawler, it is worth checking what it is used for. If you block access to a bot that helps an AI service find information on the Internet, your website’s content may become unavailable to that service.
Simply put, if you want your content to be found through AI search, make sure that the necessary AI bots are not blocked from accessing your website.
Does Optimization Guarantee Inclusion in AI Answers?
Good structure and open access help AI systems find and correctly understand content, but they do not guarantee that your website will be used as a source. The choice may be influenced by the relevance to the query, the quality and relevance of the information, and other factors. Therefore, AI optimization should be seen as an opportunity to increase the chances of visibility rather than as a guaranteed way to get traffic.
How to Measure AI Optimization Results
A website may frequently appear as a source but receive few visits. At the same time, a small amount of AI traffic may demonstrate good conversion. Therefore, after optimization, it is worth separately analyzing the website’s visibility in AI answers, referral traffic, and users’ subsequent actions.
Traffic from AI services can be analyzed through Google Analytics 4. We explained in more detail how to find AI traffic in GA4 and what to do with it in a separate article.
Website Optimization for AI Is a Must-Have Today
The emergence of AI search does not mean that you need to urgently rebuild your entire website or abandon familiar SEO approaches. To begin with, it is enough to check the key pages.
Is it clear from the H2 headings what each section is about? Can product features be found quickly? Are brand names used consistently? Are rates and terms up to date? Is the information available in text format? Are the pages accessible to the necessary AI systems?
If the answer to some of these questions is “no,” this is exactly where you can start optimization.
It is worth remembering that website optimization for AI does not contradict traditional SEO and does not require writing content “for machines.” Read more in our article “GEO for Affiliate Marketing. Why AI Search Doesn’t Replace SEO but Makes It Even More Important”. Most changes also make the page more convenient for regular users.
Therefore, the most practical approach for affiliates today is simple. It is worth creating content that is easy for people to understand and easy for automated systems to interpret.
