Advertising in ChatGPT Ads. Is It Relevant for Affiliate Marketing?

Published: 24.08.2026

Advertising in ChatGPT is evolving from an experiment into a standalone digital channel. OpenAI has already launched Ads Manager Beta, allowing advertisers to create campaigns, manage bids and targeting, and track results.

Users come to ChatGPT for more than just information. They compare products, look for relevant services, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions. Now, alongside organic responses, another touchpoint is emerging within this customer journey – paid advertising. At the moment, ChatGPT Ads are not available in every country, but the direction is already worth watching closely.

What Is ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI’s advertising system that allows sponsored ads to be displayed in ChatGPT. The ad unit appears separately from ChatGPT’s response and is clearly labeled as “sponsored content.” An ad may include the advertiser’s name and logo, a headline, description, image, and a link to a landing page.

The key feature of this format is the context in which users see the ad. Instead of entering a short search query such as “Loans for small businesses,” a user can describe their situation in detail: explain what their business does and specify the amount they need. In this case, they are clearly part of the target audience for your ad. This gives the system more information about the user’s intent and needs than traditional keywords or hashtags.

Does advertising affect ChatGPT’s responses?

This is one of the key questions for publishers and affiliates. According to OpenAI’s rules, ads do not influence the content of ChatGPT’s responses. The advertising system operates separately from the chat model, which means advertisers cannot pay to have their brand mentioned in an organic response, improve its position, or otherwise influence the content of the response.

At the same time, a brand, product, or website may appear organically in a ChatGPT response without paying for ad placement. Building organic visibility in AI services and running ChatGPT Ads is a separate area of promotion.

Where Are ChatGPT Ads Already Available?

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026. Ads may be shown to users on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu remain ad-free. However, it is important to distinguish between two things: the countries where users can see ads and access to Ads Manager for affiliates. The self-service Ads Manager Beta is currently available to advertisers in:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • South Korea

Companies from other countries can register their interest and wait for OpenAI to expand the availability of Ads Manager.

Unfortunately, Ukraine is not yet on this list. This means Ukrainian affiliates should not yet view ChatGPT Ads as another advertising platform where they can simply create an account and launch a campaign. Instead, now is a good time to understand how this new channel works and keep an eye on its development. Experts agree that AI will become increasingly integrated into our everyday lives, and traffic arbitrage is no exception.

Context Hints Instead of Traditional Keywords

One of the most interesting features of advertising in ChatGPT is its approach to relevance. In traditional search advertising, keywords and search queries play a major role. ChatGPT Ads, however, uses context hints. These are signals that affiliates can use to describe the topics, situations, and needs in which their product may be relevant.

For example, in the PDL vertical, an affiliate with access to Ads Manager could use context hints related to situations such as:

  • needing money before payday;
  • facing unexpected expenses;
  • needing to urgently pay for a repair or purchase;
  • looking for a way to quickly get a small loan online.

However, context hints do not work like exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in response to a specific phrase. The system considers multiple signals at once, including the context and intent of the conversation, ad copy, landing page, context hints, and campaign settings.

How the ChatGPT Ads Auction Works

To select which ads are shown, OpenAI uses a relevance-adjusted second-price auction. This means that the highest bid alone does not guarantee that an ad will be displayed. The system considers the affiliate’s bid together with how relevant a particular ad is to the conversation and the user’s potential needs.

ChatGPT Ads supports key performance-based buying models, but the platform is particularly suited to the CPC model, as advertisers pay per click and the system aims to optimize delivery toward clicks that are more likely to result in the desired action. For CPC campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of approximately $3–$5 per click. However, this is only a guideline and not a guaranteed cost.

Of course, it is important to understand that there is not yet enough data to establish reliable average benchmarks. ChatGPT Ads remains a beta platform, so it is still too early to compare its performance directly with Google Ads, Meta Ads, or affiliate channels.

What Targeting is Available

ChatGPT Ads supports geographic targeting and Custom Audiences. Geographic targeting can be configured not only at the country level but also by region, city, and even postal code. Custom Audiences can be created using first-party data, such as email addresses or phone numbers.

These audiences can be used to include or exclude specific groups of users and adjust bids. However, there is one significant limitation. To use a Custom Audience, you need at least 25,000 matched users, while OpenAI recommends an audience size of 100,000 or more. This means that the tool is primarily designed for larger teams with substantial first-party data sets.

What ChatGPT Ads Could Change for Affiliate Marketing

This is where things get particularly interesting. Let’s imagine a typical customer journey. A user is looking for a specific financial product, online service, or product. They first visit a website through Google, read a review, or compare several offers on an affiliate’s comparison page. Then they open ChatGPT to compare the options once again.

In ChatGPT, they receive an organic response, see a relevant ad below it, and click through to the affiliate’s website. So, who actually brought in the customer? From the advertising platform’s perspective, ChatGPT Ads may be the last measurable touchpoint. However, the user’s decision may have been influenced much earlier by a website, review, SEO content, or another channel.

This makes the attribution challenge even more complex. The emergence of another advertising channel does not mean that publishers will become less important. However, proving their contribution to the customer journey may become more difficult.

Will ChatGPT Ads compete with affiliate websites?

Potentially, yes, especially for queries with strong commercial intent. If a user asks to compare services, find a product, or choose between several offers, advertising may also be relevant within the same context.

For affiliates, this creates another reason to focus not only on traditional SEO but also on content quality and expertise, information structure, product comparisons, and answers to specific audience needs.

AI platforms are gradually becoming another environment where product decisions are made. That is why the affiliate’s goal is to be present as early as possible in the customer journey rather than competing only for the last click.

What Can Affiliates Do Before ChatGPT Ads Launch in Their Country?

Launching self-service ChatGPT Ads directly from most countries is not yet possible. However, this does not mean that the new channel can be ignored. First and foremost, it is worth keeping an eye on the expansion of Ads Manager into new regions. OpenAI is actively developing its advertising platform, so the list of available markets may change in the near future.

We recommend analyzing how AI is changing the customer journey across different verticals. If users are increasingly turning to AI services for recommendations, product comparisons, and decision-making, this is already affecting affiliate marketing, regardless of whether Ads Manager is currently available in other countries.

Most importantly, affiliates should focus on creating content around real user needs rather than simply targeting a set of keywords. Queries such as “Which option is better?”, “What is the difference between X and Y?”, “Which service is best for…?” and other searches with clear intent are becoming increasingly important.

Is ChatGPT Ads Worth Paying Attention To?

ChatGPT Ads is not yet a fully accessible advertising tool for affiliates, and the platform itself is still in beta. However, its launch highlights an important direction in the evolution of digital advertising. Advertising is gradually shifting from targeting individual keywords toward understanding user context, needs, and intent. This creates another touchpoint between users and advertisers directly at the comparison and decision-making stage.

For now, rather than rushing to move budgets into a new channel, it is more important to understand how it works, follow its development, and consider AI platforms as part of a broader traffic acquisition strategy for the future.

ChatGPT Ads is only beginning to gain momentum, but AI is already changing the way users search for, compare, and choose products. And that means new opportunities are emerging for affiliate marketing as well.
